Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo: Enclosed, Multi-Color, Under $600. Who Is It For?

Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo

For years the rule was simple: under $700 you get an open-frame printer, and if you want an enclosure for ABS or Nylon you pay $1,000 and up. The Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo breaks that rule. For $599 you get a fully enclosed CoreXY machine, a 350°C hotend, a heated 110°C bed, and Elegoo's new CANVAS 4-color system in the box.

It's the printer we get asked about most right now. Here is what it does well, where it makes compromises, and who should buy it.

Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo

Quick Recommendation

  • You want to print ABS, ASA or Nylon on a budget: this is the cheapest enclosed printer we sell that does it properly.
  • You want multi-color without the Bambu price: the CANVAS system is included, so 4-color printing starts at $599.
  • You only print PLA and want the simplest app experience: the Bambu Lab A1 Combo is still the easier first printer. More on that below.

The Enclosure Is the Whole Point

An open-frame printer is fine for PLA and PETG. The moment you try ABS, ASA, Nylon or polycarbonate, the part cools unevenly, corners lift off the bed and layers split. An enclosure keeps the air around the part warm and still, which is why every serious engineering printer has one.

The Centauri Carbon 2 is enclosed on all sides with a metal frame, a glass door and a lid, and it vents through an activated carbon filter so you can print ABS in a room with the door closed. Combined with the 350°C hotend and 110°C bed, it covers the materials list you'd expect from printers costing twice as much: PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS, ASA and PLA-CF are the everyday materials, and it is rated for PETG-CF, ABS-CF, ASA-CF, PET-CF, PA-CF, PA and PC when you need them.

The 350°C ceiling matters. Most printers in this class stop at 300°C, which is enough for ABS but marginal for Nylon and polycarbonate blends. The extra 50°C, together with the 45 mm³/s hotend flow, means the CC2 prints hot materials at full speed instead of crawling.

CANVAS: Four Colors Out of the Box

The Combo version includes CANVAS, Elegoo's answer to the AMS. It sits on top of the printer, holds 4 spools, reads RFID tags on Elegoo filament so the slicer knows what's loaded, and can automatically switch to a matching spool when one runs out mid-print. Color changes happen at the toolhead, with a cutter, so switching is quick.

It's the tool that unlocks multi-color and multi-material printing: colorful models, dissolvable supports, or simply running a long job across two spools of the same color. Filament is sold separately, and it works with any brand of 1.75 mm spool, not only Elegoo's.

Speed and Motion

The CoreXY layout moves only the toolhead in X and Y while the bed moves down slowly in Z. That's why the CC2 can hit 500 mm/s and 20,000 mm/s² acceleration and still print clean corners: there is no heavy bed swinging back and forth. It is also why the printer is taller and heavier than an open bed-slinger, at 19 kg with a 49 × 50 × 56 cm footprint. Give it a solid table.

Where It Makes Compromises

An honest review has to say what you're not getting for $599:

  • Software ecosystem. Elegoo's slicer and cloud are good and improving, but Bambu Studio, MakerWorld and the Bambu Handy app are still the smoothest experience for a complete beginner. If you've never sliced a model before, that gap is real for the first few weeks.
  • Fewer filament sensors. The CC2 detects runout, but it has no filament odometry or tangle detection the way Bambu's AMS does. Keep your spools tidy.
  • No built-in filament drying. Neither does any printer at this price. For PETG, TPU and Nylon, a filament dryer is the accessory to buy next.
  • Passive chamber. The chamber retains heat rather than actively heating it. For ABS and ASA that's plenty; for large polycarbonate or PA parts you'll pre-heat the bed for a few minutes first.

Where It Sits in the Elegoo Lineup

The Centauri Carbon 2 is Elegoo's flagship FDM printer, and it changes what the rest of the range is for:

  • Neptune 4 ($299), Neptune 4 Plus ($549), Neptune 4 Max ($699): open-frame bed-slingers. Choose them for the lowest entry price or for a big bed (320 mm and 420 mm on the Plus and Max) when you only print PLA and PETG.
  • Centauri Carbon 2 Combo ($599): enclosed, multi-color, engineering materials. For most people buying Elegoo today this is the one.
  • OrangeStorm Giga ($2,999): the 800 mm monster for signage, props and furniture-scale prints.
  • Resin: the Mars 5 ($349) and Saturn 4 Ultra family are a different technology for miniatures, jewelry and dental work.

Centauri Carbon 2 Combo vs Bambu Lab: The Question Everyone Asks

The honest comparison is by price bracket. Against the A1 Combo ($649) the CC2 gives you an enclosure, a hardened nozzle and a 350°C hotend for $50 less, while the A1 gives you the friendlier app, MakerWorld one-tap printing and the lighter, quieter open frame. Against the P2S Combo ($1,199), which is the enclosed printer it really competes with, the CC2 is $600 cheaper and gives up the AI failure detection, the drying AMS 2 Pro and Bambu's polish.

Our rule of thumb: if the materials you want to print need an enclosure and the budget is under $700, the CC2 is the printer to buy. If the budget stretches to the P2S, the P2S is the more complete machine. And if you only ever print PLA, the A1 Combo remains the easiest way in. We sell all of them and we're happy to walk you through the three.

Who Should Buy the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo?

  • You want to print ABS, ASA, Nylon or carbon-fiber filaments without spending $1,000+
  • You want 4-color printing included, not as a later upgrade
  • You're a student, engineer or small workshop printing functional parts, jigs and enclosures
  • You already know your way around a slicer, or you're happy to learn one
  • You have a solid table and a spot for a 56 cm tall enclosed printer
